Monthly Meeting Program via Zoom, Saving the Salamanders
Speaker: KEVIN STOHLGREN, Regional Heritage Program biologist for the Maryland
Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) – Note: speaker change from Ms. Schlimm.
The MD DNR has been working for years to reverse the decline of tiger salamanders, which can grow to over a foot in length in Delmarva wetlands. Beth will discuss how wetland biologists have helped restore numerous Delmarva bays by returning hydrology and vegetation to natural conditions favorable to increasing tiger salamander breeding. Although still endangered in Maryland, these efforts are bearing fruit with an increase in salamander populations over the past few years. Beth has worked for MD DNR since 2016. She is a conservation specialist whose primary responsibilities include monitoring and habitat restoration efforts for rare, threatened and endangered reptiles and amphibians.
